Publication on Textiles from the Nile Valley. "Silk Textiles from Egypt and Neighbouring Countries from Roman to Mamluk Times"

03/11/2025

This book brings together 19 articles, mainly about early silk textiles from Egypt and the Mediterranean region.

Silk was highly valued for its sheen and the fineness of its fibers. From Roman times onward, it was imported from China, but local silk production also began to develop. Silk is associated with the emergence of complex weaving techniques and served as a status symbol in society. The spread and use of silk, as well as the rise of local silk cultivation in the first millennium AD, have not yet been fully researched.

In this book, renowned experts delve deeper into early silk finds from excavations, the use of silk for clothing, and the weaving techniques of silk textiles.

This publication is based on the findings of the 13th International Scientific Conference on Textiles from the Nile Valley, which took place from November 17 to 19, 2023, in Antwerp.
